BHAGALPUR: Unlike Ganga, it was the turn of Chanan, Gerua and Cheer rivers this year to overflow their banks.
Due to heavy torrential rains since Friday, scores of houses were washed away and hundreds were inundated under several feet of water on both banks of these rivers and the whole Jagdishpur block has been cut off from the district headquarters.

Plying of buses and trains have come to a complete halt between Bhagalpur and Banka. By Sunday afternoon, an estimated 50,000 persons had reportedly been shifted to safer areas as the swollen Chanan, Gerua and Cheer rivers still threaten to enter the homes of hundreds more.
The problem was compounded by the sudden release of water from the Lakshmipur Dam, in Banka which reportedly received a huge inflow from the catchment areas.
The flood water has breached the Bhagalpur-Banka Road at nearly half a dozen points. According to Bhagalpur DM Vipin Kumar, rescue and relief operations have been put to service at the breached points.
Relief distribution has been started at the appropriate time, he told TOI, adding, "hopefully, nothing will go wrong if we do not have another unprecedented spell of heavy rain.
We are providing prepared meals, including chopped rice, jaggery and khichdi, polythene sheets, candles, matchboxes and drinking water to the displaced villagers. We are also arranging boats for their safe movement," he said.
